The Basics of Windows XP For Beginners; Windows XP Support. Windows XP is the latest and some say greatest version of Microsoft's Windows desktop series of programs. It's the upgrade to the old consumer versions of Windows 95/ 98/Me as well as to the business, server, and power-user versions (Windows NT and 2000). Windows is an operating system (OS), a program that manages your entire computer system, That's including the screen, mouse, keyboard, drives, memory, and central processor (CPU). Windows also provides a graphical user interface, or GUI, which enables you to control your computer by using your mouse, icons, and windows. You can also use Windows keyboard commands.

Windows XP is designed to work for power computer users and first time computer users, and comes initially in three versions: Home Edition (for home), Professional (for offices & home), and 64-Bit Edition (for technical workstations that use the Intel Itanium CPU). Microsoft plans to release two more editions of Windows XP, renamed Windows .NET: Windows .NET Server and Advanced Server (for network server machines).

Microsoft has produced two editions of Windows. The older desktop versions were Windows 3.1/ 95/ 98/Me, that were intended for workstation use--that's, on personal computers that people used directly. Windows NT 4, NT 5, and 2000 the server versions, that were intended to be use on servers computers that provide services to other computers on a network and by high-end users. WinXpFix.com

On The Screen?

On the Screen? Windows XP uses windows to display information on your screen, icons provide picture buttons to click on, and the taskbar is the central mission control center for your computer, like previous versions of Windows. Microsoft has made a major effort to clean up the screen in Windows XP: you should see fewer menu commands and icons. But, you can always add more icons and commands for all the programs and files you use frequently.

The Desktop? The Windows OS uses your screen as a desktop, a work area on which you see your programs. The desktop, contain windows, icons, and the taskbar. Think of the windows, Web pages, and icons that appear on your screen as "sitting" on your desktop, like the all the papers, folders and notebooks on your real desktop. WinXpFix.com

Windows XP Icon? An icon is a little picture button on your screen. If you double-click the icon, or select the icon using your keyboard and hit ENTER, something happens. Windows uses icons to represent programs, files, and commands.

You can choose how the icons on your Windows desktop and those in Explorer windows work when you click them, you can have them run when you click on them once or double-click on them.

The icons on your desktop that have a curved arrow in a little white box in the lower-left corner of the icon are called shortcuts and represent files or programs on your computer. You may create your own shortcut icons for your programs and files. WinXpFix.com
